Fogwater chemistry in an urban atmosphere
نویسندگان
چکیده
Analyses of fogwater collected by inertial impaction in the Los Angeles basin and the San Joaquin Valley indicated unusually high concentrations of major and minor ions. The dominant ions measured were NO3-, SO,• 2-, NH,• +, and H +. Nitrate exceeded sulfate on an equivalent basis by a factor of 2.5 in the central and coastal regions of the Los Angeles basin but was approximately equal in the eastern Los Angeles basin and the San Joaquin Valley. Maximum observed values for NH,• +, NO3-, and SO,• 2were 10.0, 12.0, and 5.0, meq l•, while the lowest pH observed was 2.2. Iron and lead concentrations ofover 0.1 mM and 0.01 mM, respectively, were observed. High concentrations of chemical components in fog appeared to correlate well with the occurrence of smog events. Concentrations in fogwater were also affected by the physical processes of condensation and evaporation. Light, dissipating fogs routinely showed the highest concentrations.

Fogwater deposition modeling for terrestrial ecosystems: A review of developments and measurements
Recent progress in modeling fogwater (and low cloud water) deposition over terrestrial ecosystems during fogwater droplet interception by vegetative surfaces is reviewed. Several types of models and parameterizations for fogwater deposition are discussed with comparing assumptions, input parameter requirements, and modeled processes. The relationships among deposition velocity of fogwater (Vd) ...
متن کاملLevels of PM10 and its Chemical Composition in the Atmosphere of the City of Isfahan
Airborne particulate matter (PM10 ) was collected from the atmosphere of the city of Isfahan. The concentration of heavy metals and anions associated with airborne particulate matter were determined using atomic absorption spectrometric and ion chromatographic techniques. A comparison was made between the variation in the concentration of PM10 and that for heavy metals and...
متن کاملDetermination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Ambient Urban Air
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHS) have been determined in the atmosphere of Isfahan, Iran. Airborne particulate matter was sampled using a high-volume air sampler at roof-top level (~6m). Extraction of PAHS from airborne particulate matter has been performed using SFE system and the relationship between the extraction temperature and the recovery of PAHS</su...
متن کاملSecondary organic aerosol formation from anthropogenic air pollution: Rapid and higher than expected
[1] The atmospheric chemistry of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in urban areas results in the formation of ‘photochemical smog’, including secondary organic aerosol (SOA). State-of-the-art SOA models parameterize the results of simulation chamber experiments that bracket the conditions found in the polluted urban atmosphere. Here we show that in the real urban atmosphere reactive anthropogen...
متن کاملIon fluxes from fog and rain to an agricultural and a forest ecosystem in Europe
The deposition fluxes of inorganic compounds dissolved in fog and rain were quantified for two different ecosystems in Europe. The fogwater deposition fluxes were measured by employing the eddy covariance method. The site in Switzerland that lies within an agricultural area surrounded by the Jura mountains and theAlps is often exposed to radiation fog. At the Germanmountain forest ecosystem, on...
